THE FUTURE IS GREEN

‘We are planning for the future’ as a phrase is now a nursery rhyme’ among politicians here in Africa and Nigeria in particular, even when such plan is not a healthy one. What of the present?  Is my big question? It is important to note that there is nothing wrong with drawing upon the imagination in preparation for the future. But the trouble we have now is that our leadership has entered into an unhealthy and unrealistic preoccupation with the future. Once read somewhere that  people that are engrossed in the future never have effect  on the present  with their dreams of what lies ahead  because they are too preoccupied with the future for it to have any effect on the present.

To them “the present is messy, the future is glorious-so they try to live in it”. The evidence to this fact is not far-fetched, from the experience of leadership in Nigeria, you can see the truth in this saying; first it was vision 2010, we are now in 2012, I don’t know how many of the dreams came through, now its 20-2020, that they are projecting, but the present policies cannot get us there; though am of the school of thought that says a good leader always knows what is right even when every other persons are against it, however such leaders are those that have shown proven integrity over time.

The present situation calls for a rapid change of leadership style from those who exist in the never-never land of projected dreams. They have no roots in the present, so they bring forth no fruits in the present.

Having established the need for a future but today oriented leadership, and as the struggle for subsidy continues in Nigeria and various austerity measures been put in place by governments of Nations to fight the current hardship hitting the masses caused by gullible politicians, living by the direct interpretation of their names (poly-Latin word for many, litic can be traced to a Hebrew word that means Demons sucking bloods; Politicians= groups of demons that suck bloods #Just a thought).

As we progress in year 2012, it’s a year the world has been waiting for, because the agenda for the next generation will be set at RIO+20 (20 years after the original earth summit, heads of states will meet again in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012 for the UN conference on sustainable development. The issues to be discussed are the building of a green economy and sustainable development governance)  climate and sustainable development conference of the UN in Brazil, for the whole of 2011, various pre-con activities heralded by young persons were head across the globe, climaxing in the December 2012 meeting in Duban-South Africa; at a regional meeting heard in Kumasi/Accra in Ghana for the west African sub-region August 2011, where I followed proceeding, the youths at the event now understood what the future means, we demanded for GREEN ECONOMY NOW! With the  believe that there is convincing evidence that a swift transition to a Green Economy can bring about lasting solutions to current problems and mitigate the effects of climate change.

And for me I had  a dream of a green future at the conference, and this future can only come true if our leadership knows what green economy means; green as a colour stands for healthiness, so if our leadership really want a better future for us, they must consider the need of today under prevailing circumstances, with the best interest of the future generation at heart, because if you kill, or deprive the present generation of the needed nutrients to give birth to a healthy future generation, then your obsession with the future is useless.

As we all awaits a strong UN resolution in June and hope our leaders adheres to it, since they are now part of the planning process; I say it’s a year of hope & possibility, the future is GREEN.
